SPOILERS INBOUND
Kyle Reyes (Josh Harnett) is have a bad day. He's stuck in Thailand, out of money, and being pursued by loansharks. And the one place he's found to drink is being haunted by ghost of his past. No not litural ghost, just his ex-girlfriend on the phone. His ex who also happens to run a secret org with the ability to give him back his old life. If he just does this one job for them. This is where Fight or Flight starts us off. Kyle Reyes is a blacklist ex-secret service agent who can't leave Thailand because of it. That's until he gets a call from his ex, who needs him to find target and get them safely to the United States. Do this and he gets his life back. There just one catch; no one knows who the target is or what they look like. Kyle boards the plane only to find out that someone has put a hit out on the target and the plane has been load with assassins. And no one knows who the others are.
With that setup, Fight or Flight takes off for a ton of fun. This movie isn't here to be taken seriously. Think Snakes on a Plane or Bullet Train. The characters are overtop, but that's a good thing. Josh Hartnett comes into this movie after last years Trap by M. Night Shyamalan. In Trap he's a sociopathic serial killer being cornered by the cops. He plays the role seriously and comes off as a true villian. In Fight or Flight, he is not that. I honestly think Josh takes a roles like this so relieve the stress that comes from doing the more serious roles. Don't get me wrong, he plays this role just as well as any role he has in the past, but I think movies like this let him let his hair down and just have fun with it. And that's what you get with this movie. As Kyle Reyes he bumbles his way through fights and confrontations trying to uncover who the target is. When he does, he most figure out how to keep them safe and make sure that they arrive in the States alive. The target agrees that they want to stay safe and alive, but making it to the States isn't part of their plan.
As the movie progress we learn why Kyle was blacklist, why the target is wanted by everyone, and who is behind the hit place on them. It makes us sympathetic to Kyle and the Target so the ending can be brought in for a smooth landing. But overall, it's just a good action pack comedy. The story is paper thin, but it doesn't need to be anything more.
Should you watch it:
Short answer yes. Long answer also yes. This movie is just fun. You don't need focused for plot twist or worried about missing anything. You don't even have to be sober (I wasn't). It's just a goofy action movie that is only an hour and forty min. It's great for a movie night with friends or a lazy Sunday afternoon. Plus if you are a fan of Lucky Number Slevin, Kyle Reyes seems like he could just be the sequal Slevin Kelevra.
